Duties and responsibilities:

Assist in the timely preparation, maintenance and provision of geographic information and maps in support of the mission’s operations;
Collect, process and evaluate geographic data including vector, raster and thematic data;
Compile large-scale operation maps and small-scale briefing/report maps;
Assist in collecting geographic data with mission stake holders, NGO and host nation;
Assist in performing quality control (QC) on products generated and disseminated by the Section including geo-data and maps;
Archive mission geographic data and maintain the mission’s geo-database system;
Assist in providing GIS and GPS training in Arabic & English;
Travel to team sites for data collection and to conduct GPS survey;
Provide expertise on local context including social, cultural, and geographical factors that affect UNAMID GIS operations;
Formulate and participate in personal learning/capacity development program that is relevant to this assignment;
Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required: Education: A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree will be an advantage) in the field of GIS/Geomatics, mapping, engineering or equivalent qualifications in GIS related study and a strong background in the field of Information Technology (IT). Alternatively, a minimum of a Bachelor in the field of IT and a strong background in the field of GIS. Experience: Minimum three (3) years of extensive experience in GIS, especially ESRI & ERDAS products such as Arcinfo, spatial analyst, etc. Language: Excellent command of spoken and written English and fluency in Arabic. Other Skills: Direct work experience in UN/NGO GIS field operations would be an asset. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national staff. Demonstrated ability to use computer applications such as Microsoft Office suites – Word, Power-Point and Excel Spreadsheets. Valid driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 vehicles. Affinity with or interest in volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development and the UN System. Fluency in written and spoken Arabic and English with ability to draft reports in either language. Sound security awareness.
