I'm at my wits end, having looked through a number of posts and tried several options. At this point I'm just looking for confirmation that I cannot do what I am trying to do without ArcGIS or using a SQL addon to QGIS.
I would like to link/connect/join whatever two sets of data in a way that will let me do calculations using values from both sets in a one to many relationship. I have one set of data with town codes attached to a vector layer map of the towns. My other set of data is a list a businesses with various attributes. I would like in the end to be able to lookup the total employment or average wage for a given town, or make statewide gradient maps of labor stats in each town, which involve calculating from multiple businesses. I have successfully joined, related and linked these two tables in QGIS and gvSIG, using the town codes in both tables. gvSIG linking is the only one I was told would actually work. However, it acts the same as a relate in QGIS. It registers that they are connected, but no query or select tool allows me to make a function using values from both tables. Is there anyway to actually do this, aside from getting ArcGIS?
