DEM and r2stl() distorted models?

If I import a dem file into R and then call as.matrix() on it, I can access z values. I want to create a 3D model, but I'm getting strange results. Most of my dems are spiky and if they are smooth I noticed that r2stl() creates an stl file that is 1mm x 1mm with z values, even if my x and y values are not equal. This distorts the model. Is there a way to get a solid stl file with r2stl that is closer to the results from writeSTL (which just creates a surface)
